For our little guy...

I am back! Rested, tanned, and rejuvenated. It's amazing what some Vitamin D can do! My parents are the best and super easy to travel with. It was go-with-the-flow all weekend with no real set in stone plans. We went to the pool everyday for a few hours, my mom and I got a spa treatment (prenatal massage for me!) and we had the chance to see my Aunt and Uncle and Cousin who live nearby. Overall it was the perfect getaway and now it's time to get ready for baby!

While I was gone, my husband did some shopping with our little guy. Sometimes what he comes back with can be questionable (superhero logo tees?!). But this time he did good! He picked up these adorable Chambray Toms which will be perfect this summer. I love how they kind of look like a boat shoe with the leather details.

Thank goodness we finally found a Crocs replacement!!!! Toms are SO much cuter :)

Boyish Sophistication

You may remember my friend Rachel, as I featured her on my Super Model Mom series a few months back. You also may have seen her fabulous Scooby Doo party posted on P is for Party. Well, I am bringing Rachel back to share with us her sons new GORGEOUS bedroom. Seriously, it's to die for. It's the perfect mix of boyish sophistication. From top to bottom, Rachel didn't miss a beat...

The curtains were made by Calico Corners using a Ralph Lauren fabric
The lamps are "Kub" from Lite Source (Amazon.com)
The blue quilt and sham are Ralph Lauren Palm Harbor collection (which I just saw is discontinued and at a great price on ralphlauren.com)
The orange blanket is Z Gallerie
The bed skirt is Pottery Barn
The headboards are FabricWorkroom.com
The rug is JC Penney

All of the animal artwork is handmade by Rachel. She was so kind to put together her "how to" make these adorable animal silhouette prints.

The art does not require any artistic ability; the most important things are a great pair of small craft scissors (splurge on the best one - you won't regret it), a good staple gun, spray adhesive and fabric glue. Once you've decided on your subject, do a Google Image search for a silhouette. Depending on how large you want your subject, you can print it onto standard paper (like I did for the elephants) or use a projector to enlarge an image and trace it onto posterboard (like I did for the giraffe). If you can't find what you need, you can always freehand (like I did with the attached dog image which was in Will's old room)
Next, hit the fabric store - I got everything for the boys' room at Jo-Ann Fabrics & Crafts. Start with a canvas of any size from the art department. You can cover it with a vinyl or (p)leather material (like the red material in the attached) from the home fabric section, which is so heavy that it does not need any batting. If you're using a standard fabric, you'll need a thin batting (also in the fabric section on large spools) so that the fabric lays smoothly. Don't just look in the fashion fabric section - some of the more fun, graphic prints are in the home section - especially the outdoor fabric lines. If you buy the canvas, fabric and batting at the same time, the fabric department can cut the latter two to fit the frame. While you're there, pick up small cuts of the 2 contrasting fabrics for your "subject" and its background (I highly recommend a sturdy vinyl/pleather for these if your subject has a lot of detail)... and some trim to outline it (rope, pom pom trim ,etc).
To assemble, use a staple gun to attach the vinyl or batting to the canvas - pulling it taught to eliminate any wrinkles. If you're using batting and fabric, you won't want to pull the fabric quite as hard or it will pucker. If you have a busy pattern, make sure it's aligned well in front before you start to staple in the back.  If you do get wrinkles or puckers, it's easy to remove the staples and start over.
Next, cut the background for your subject (I use a plate or cup to trace a circle and I print out more complex shapes). To cut the subject, use tape to adhere the paper to the fabric and carefully cut the outline (I use lots of small pieces of tape so that the uncut portion doesn't shift at all as you go along). Use a light coat of spray adhesive (OUTSIDE! - this gets everywhere) to adhere the background to the fabric and then smooth it out to avoid any bubbles. Use the fabric glue to adhere the subject to the background - if it's a complex design with small details, use a brush to apply the glue so that it doesn't bleed. The final touch is using the fabric glue to apply the trim to the outside of the background.

ABSOLUTELY adorable! Thank you Rachel for sharing all of your resources and DIY artwork. I bet your boys are in LOVE with their new room.

And stay tuned, Rachel just had a baby girl and I will be sharing her nursery with you later this week!

Almost as good as ruby slippers...

When my parents were in town over the New Year, my Dad offered to take Julian to get a new pair of shoes. Mind you, the poor kid was just coming down with Bronchitis, but we had been cooped up all day, so we thought, why not take him to Nordstrom! (poor kid, he was probably so miserable...)

My Dad has a thing for tennis shoes, so I let him pick them out. Ironically he picked out the EXACT pair I had my eye on weeks earlier. We even let Julian decide and he picked the same ones too! So, here is what we got...

sorry for the bad I phone photo, but I couldn't find them online. These are the Saucony Jazz in my favorite shade of Kelly Green. Aren't they so cute?

Here is my sweet (but sick at the time) boy SO pumped about his new sneakers. When he wears them he has a little extra bounce in his step and he never wants to take them off. Wherever we go he likes to tell people about them....

I wonder if this is the start of a shoe obsession?

available in Nordstrom kids Shoes $35

My little Menace

This is about a week late, but I wanted to share pics of Julian dressed as Dennis the Menace for Halloween. It was the most comfortable costume, and he didn't even mind us spiking his hair up with tons of pomade and hairspray! He can't stop talking about Dracula and Ghosts...we are hoping this is quickly replaced by Santa and Reindeers. I don't know if I can hear "Mommy, where's Dracula?" one more time!!!!!!!!

busting a move at the Halloween party

happy as a clam, heading out to trick or treat...

Over the top

I finally found a shopping website where the boys clothes actually stack up nicely to the girls selection. AlexandAlexa.com was featured as one of InStyle's favorite children's sites. I have to agree, it is nothing short of fabulous.

Their selection of designer kids wear is out of this world. Everything from Mini Marc Jacobs to D&G Junior, Gaultier Junior and Paul Smith. Here are a few faves from the Boys 2-3T selection...

D&G Junior

Hackett Vest

Paul Smith striped cardigan

Gaultier Junior Striped knit

D&G Junior gloves

Oh and when I went to the girls tab, this is one of the first items that came up

I can't even get started on the girl stuff...way too much cuteness to choose from!

Genius

I really didn't intend to go to Wine country and return with a toy for my son. But there was the most charming kids store in Yountville, CA called Lemondrop Kids and I couldn't help but look for something for Julian.

It was a store chock full of great toys. Rare finds, not the stuff you see in Toys R Us. The knowledgeable owner geared me to some perfect toys for our now 2 year old. We decided to go with  Pop Rocketz. $12 for a "air popper" and 3 foam rockets. It says for 4 plus, but the lady assured me that 2 plus can work this toy.

Sure enough, we have now had hours of fun with the Pop Rocketz. Even my nieces and nephews ( 6 years plus) had a blast playing with the popper.

Not to scare you with the word Christmas (we still have 3 months to go) But wouldn't these be a great stocking stuffer?

Sophisticated Sneakers

They know what they are doing in Italy. When it comes to design, they just always seem to get it right! The same goes for a favorite of mine, Superga Tennis shoes. Julian's best "girlfriend" had them on the other day and it just re-affirmed my love for the shoe. Little Charlotte had them on with the cutest floral dress. It was the perfect combo of sweet and sporty. I of course love them for boys...but we all know there are many more options for boys with Tennis shoes! For girls, it's a bit harder and I think Superga fills that void very nicely.

Another great feature...the velcro straps! I HATE tying shoes, it's just not easy when you have a wiggle worm of a toddler. These are perfect for that. All the shoes range between $40-$55, available HERE

The Mary Jane is a personal favorite of mine

And for the boys...

These would be darling on a toddler boy!

Not a baby anymore...

My son turns 2 in a month. I am trying not to get sentimental about it, because all kids grow up. But as so many people have said before "it goes by too fast", and now I know what they mean! It dawned on me today when I was looking at winter coats and boots...I am now shopping in the toddler section!

And as you know, the style of toddler clothes is so different, they all of a sudden look very grown up. Gone are the onesies and pull on pants, and now I am looking at cargos and button down shirts and shoes appropriate for running! I have to admit, the toddler clothes are so darn cute!

Would he not be the cutest kid on the block sporting one of these?! All by Appaman on Little Boy Chic.com

totally obsessed with this Pea Coat...

and if you have a little boy, do yourself a favor and get him these sweat pants. Seriously the cutest pant you have ever seen on, my son had them last year and I think I might just have to get them again!

BOYS BOYS BOYS!

For all you moms out there that have a boy, you know how hard it is to find different, cute, stylish boys stuff. There is an occasional gem here and there, but it takes some time to search out and find the GOOD STUFF. Well, I stumbled across a great line of boys novelty tees, and guess what? They don't cost a fortune!

The line is Wes and Willy.  Apparently they have been around since 1989, but I have never seen them before! I found them on a great boy site called Pure Boy clothes.com. Then I went to their site to see what else they had to offer. Apparently they do pants, jeans, swim trunks and even a girls line!!!!!

The boys stuff is edgier in feel, but not too over the top. I just love the tee shirts...FINALLY a cool graphic tee that doesn't have Elmo & Friends on it...which, let's all just admit there is at least one in the closet!

by FAR my favorite. I am a Minnesota girl, with a love for Hockey.

like the washed out look of this tee...

this screams ADDISON AND FINN! (Julian's best playmates) Gina and Jen...you like?

I do not have links to the bottom 2, but they were found HERE

Such a sucker for stripes and this LaCrosse tee

Great applique, great color.

And for my Scout followers, I did a bit of store research on Wes and Willy. Here is some store info:

Chicago: psycho baby. LMNOP, E Street, Stinky Pants and Von Maur
Indiana: Von Mauer, Pipers in Valparaiso and Fishers
Kansas/Missouri: Von Maur
Minnesota: Doozie, Kids on Division, Banana's, Tangerine at Wildflowers, Von Maur
California: too many too list!

I'm pining for...

We are leaving for Florida in a month, and I would love for my son and husband to have matching swim trunks by Vilebrequin. If you aren't familiar with them, I am warning you now...they are hefty on the pocket book, but they are possibly the cutest swim trunks you will ever find. The brand is out of St.Tropez, and they make the most unbelievable prints!

They are colorful, unique, and the quality is quite amazing. We first saw them when we traveled to Tahiti and we saw all of these little boys and dads in matching trunks, with the signature big VILEBREQUIN tag across the back. We searched for them high and low in Tahiti, but they were INSANELY expensive, because of the euro.

We were so excited to find a Vilebrequin store in Naples, FL where we vacation every winter. The prices are still high ($200 plus for adult trunks), but somewhat justifiable, because they are not your typical swim trunks. Now that we have a son, and he's at the age where he can fit into their junior line we may just have to get him a pair for the summer....what do you think? Ridiculous to spend $110 on kids swim trunks!!!???
